July 15:: 2007

Orchard Beach was the place to be on Sunday, July 15th...why? Because it was the day that the 2007 All-Star Edition became an instant classic. You know when you watch a NCAA or NBA basketball game on television and then like one or two days later, it's on NBATV or ESPN Classic? It's the same feeling for this game...an instant classic. Why was it a classic? Well, the first ever 14 and under division All-Star Game took place, the HITS 16 and under division All-Star team defeated the UPA all-stars and the Men's All-Star Game climbed up the ladder of one of the greatest games to ever take place at Hoops in the Sun. The '07 version saw Steve Burtt, Jr. aka "The Condemned" break the All-Star scoring record for msot points in a game with 51 points, including the game tying three-point shot just as Bobby Cey yelled "THE WEST NEEDS A THREE TO TIE"....I guess you know what happened after that....Co-MVP's were given out to Kenny "Serious Satellite" Satterfield and Aaron "The Problem" Williams, a first in All-Star Game history..oh yeah..and the game went into overtime. It just had to go into overtime. Shannod "JFK/Flight of the Phoenix" Burton won the 2007 Slam Dunk competition, dethroning "Summerslam" Mike Peterson, who was a no show. NBA PG Smush Parker aka "NBA Live/The Aviator" was in attendance, as well as Jason Foxx, who performed his hit single "Aunt Jackie" in front of the capacity crowd..

Bobby Cey "Marv Albert of the Streets" on reactions to the 2007 All-Star Game: "

Hands down, the greatest Hoops in the Sun All-Star Game I can recall. It was an overtime thriller at the Bronx Riviera with some of the best streetballers in New York City. Steve “The Condemned” Burtt, Jr. broke a Hoops in the Sun All-Star record for most points in a game with 51 for the West squad, surpassing the original mark of 28, which just so happens to be shared by NBA point guard Smush Parker. Parker was in attendance Sunday for the game of a lifetime as the East edged the West 133-130 in OT. It seemed like all of the Bronx came through.

Burtt's 51 was lost in the mix as Kenny “Serious Satellite” Satterfield and Aaron “The Problem” Williams went to work for the East. Satterfield and Williams combined for 60 plus points, and were just enough to get past Burtt and the West. Obadiah “The Phantom Menace” Toppin put on another aerial display on a day when he entered the Hoops in the Sun Hall of Fame. “Rockin'” Ray Rivera, myself and No. 1 Fan Illena also were honored before the game. It's one of the greatest moments in my career, and a true honor to be recognized by the Cruz family, the league and the devoted Hoops in the Sun fans. There was so much media coverage at the game, it felt like Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

A lot of credit goes out to our staff, the Cruz brothers and our sponsors, who continue to support the league year after year. The Slam Dunk competition didn't disappoint. Shanod “JFK” Burton, who will be coined as "The Flight of the Phoenix" from now on, who was the ESPN City Slam regional winner in 2006, brought his “A Game” to the table. JFK threw down several thunderous jams in the competition. He was no “Summerslam” Mike Peterson, but JFK's performance ranks among the best in the eight year history of the league. J. Romer topped Parker in the Three-point Contest. It was great to see Romer, an unknown star from Back 2 Basics, win the crown. But, we'll give Parker, a Hoops in the Sun alum, a pass, since he participated while injured. Nonetheless, it was a great finish to an extremely memorable day. And to think, we're only getting started. The end of the regular season, the playoffs and the finals are still waiting. The Sun Hath No Fury…"

DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars knock off undefeated X-Men and Don't Fah-Get.com takes care of Back 2 Basics..bet they won't forget about that game.

Watching DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars go head to head with X-Men was a classic. Two teams making their mark in the '07 season. X-Men, who hadn't lost a regular season game since 2005, lost their first regular season game in over a year and a half to DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars Saturday afternoon. DDN were down by as many as fifteen points, but like they have done in the past, they brought the troops together in the 2nd half to come back and defeat X-Men. Don't Fah-Get.com routed Back 2 Basics..the final score doesn't indicate how far away the champs was from the 'Basics. 'Basics put on a good comeback, but it was a little too late.
Announcer Bobby Cey "Marv Albert of the Streets" on reactions to Game 1 and 2 on Saturday afternoon: "X-Men verses DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars. DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars won the battle, but X-Men put up a good showing. The New York Daily News did a great article on the Sean Bell All-Stars and the person the team was named after. Fans should go on-line and check it out for themselves.Game 1 between Don't Fah-Get.com and Back 2 Basics was a blowout – one of the few, luckily, we've had this summer season. Don't Fah-Get is stacked. Watch out post-season, here they come."
