June 17 :: 2007

For the most part, the second day of games lived up to the hype. Defending champions Don't Fah-Get.com edged out a victory over a valiant K 1 X team...Pops 5 left the beach victorious in a nailbiter against PR Pride...while X-Men defeated Back 2 Basics in a low scoring game reminiscent to the 2007 NBA Finals between the Spurs and Cavaliers (distinguishing whether it was good defense or bad offense)....
"Obi-Wan Kenobi/The Phantom Menace" Obadiah Toppin of Pops 5, getting the alley-oop pass from Steve Burtt, Jr., throws down two of his 15 points against PR Pride in the night cap game on Sunday afternoon. Pops 5, led by "The Condemned" Steve Burtt, Jr's 27 points, led most of the way, but briefly lost the lead in the 4th quarter where "Serious Satellite" Kenny Satterfield, 2006 regular season MVP, caught fire, scoring 16 of his game high 31 points in the 2nd half. Apparently, Satterfield was sent into orbit by a human endeavor in the 2nd half, monitoring the weather at the beach, as well as trying to bring his team to victory over Pops 5. Pops 5 would prevail over PR Pride 86-79 by having four players scoring in double figures. They will take on X-Men next Saturday afternoon at 1pm. (View box score)
Announcer Bobby Cey on reactions to Pops 5 vs PR Pride: " It's early in the summer season, but we had a blast from the past Sunday on Father's Day at the Bronx Rivera with Obadiah "Obi-Wan Kenobi" throwing down a vicious, thunderous jam for Pops 5 in a resounding win over PR Pride. "The Phantom Menace" and PR Pride's Shannod "JFK" Burton had the two best dunks of the afternoon -- both in the same game -- leaving beachside fans thirsting for more. But, once again, the Pops 5 crew is stacked for another run at the chip. Obi-Wan, Too Hard To Guard, The Condemned, Shooter, Double J...what a roster. Pops 5 gets the W, begging yet another question in 2007: Will K-Sat keep breaking scoring records, while his team, PR Pride, keeps piling up on losses, or can Satterfield take the troops to the Promised Land? Sun Hath No Fury...You'll have to come to the beach to find out! ."

Aaron "The Problem" Williams of Don't Fah-Get.com going past the K 1 X defenders on Sunday afternoon and gliding their way to victory over K 1 X, 94-89. Don't Fah-Get.com was up by as many as 20 points, but K 1 X, led by "The Undertaker" Corey Underwood (35 points and 12 rebounds), was practically burying Don't Fah-Get.com, planning and arranging the funeral ceremony of the defending champions by scoring 17 first quarter points. 'Taker and "Homicide" Corey Williams (27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists), led the team back within striking distance, to a distance where they were down by only 1 point with a minute left. But playing catch-up in the 90 degree sun must of got to K 1 X as the defending champs prevailed on Sunday afternoon in the mid game thriller. Don't Fah-Get.com were led by Gary Bryant and "Silence Of The Lambs" Will Cadiz, scoring 22 points apiece. The defending champions will go up against DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars next Sunday afternoon at 4pm in the night cap in what should be an early season classic. (View box score)
Announcer Bobby Cey on reactions to Don't Fah-Get.com vs K 1 X: " K1X showed glimpses of what's to come this summer. The newcomers were solid, but by the end of the day, an old team with a new name -- Don't Fah-Get.com -- which is comprised of all-stars like Rashaun "Crabby" Young -- showed how experience plays a valuable role in winning at Hoops in the Sun. These two teams have all the makings of a great rivalry. Don't sleep -- or shall we say, don't forget -- Don't Fah-Get.com "

X-Men, not really noted for NOT scoring a bunch of points, but I believe this game was the lowest total amount of points they've scored in a Hoops In The Sun game. They're known for their great defense as well, which is why Back 2 Basics only managed to score 45 points the entire game, with their leading scorer, man in purple in the picture, "Summerslam" Mike Peterson, only scoring 9 points. The game was pretty much an outline of the 2007 NBA Finals between the Spurs and Cavaliers, asking yourselves is it great defense or bad offense? Anyway you look at it, X-Men will take the victory and they did, 64-45, led by Jeremy Benjamin's 19 points, 15 of them coming in the 2nd half. X-Men will take on Pops 5 next Saturday afternoon at 1pm. (View box score)
Announcer Bobby Cey on reactions to X-Men vs Back 2 Basics: " "X-Men picked up from where they left off last summer, jumping out to a 1-0 record in the 2007 tourney behind a win over Back 2 Basics. Steven "The Runnin' Rebel" Chase guided a smooth offense for X-Men -- one of the top teams in New York City today. Back 2 Basics feel behind early and never fully recovered. X-Men should be in the thick of things all summer long." ."

June 16 :: 2007

First day of games didn't dissapoint the fans...a hot 81 degree day gave DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars and Court Masters victories, while it left GNC All-Stars and Enterprise going home winless....

"The Beast" BJ McFarlan and the newly entered DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars capture their first victory of the 2007 season by defeating GNC All-Stars 94-84. Things were looking good right from the jump start for DDN, with McFarlan leading the way with 15 pts and 5 rbs. Dee "Spyda" Harrison led DDN in scoring with 21 pts. Now they'll prepare for the defending back to back champions, Don't Fah-Get.com on June 24th. (View box score)
Announcer Bobby Cey on reactions to DDN vs GNC All-Stars: "Game 1 of the 2007 Joe "Pops" Cruz Hoops in the Sun Roundball Classic didn't disappoint. The GNC All-Stars fought valiantly, but the newcomers, DDN/Sean Bell All-Stars, proved it's hard to stop a "Beast" and a "Spyda" on a basketball court -- especially when they are working together. B.J. "Beast" McFarlan and Dee "Spyda" Harrison paved the way for DDN. Now, the question is: How good will they be against the rest of the field?"

This guy in the picture could not be stopped on Saturday. Anything that Court Masters threw at him, it wasn't working. But it didn't matter because the Court Masters had Dwight Hardy-the same guy ended the spring league with 34 points in the championship game. What did he do in his first game at the beach?...Score 37 points...Against who? The same team his Court Masters squad defeated in the spring league championship, Enterprise from Philadelphia, 114-108. Court Masters led most of the way, despite a 3rd quarter surge by Enterprise, but Hardy's 37 points overmatched Mike Keyes' 40 points to give Court Masters the victory. Court Masters welcome GNC All-Stars next Sunday. (View box score)
Announcer Bobby Cey on reactions to Court Masters vs Enterprise: "Enterprise's Charles "Dead Silence/The Matrix " Bostic was contained by Court Masters in Game 2 Saturday. In the marquee matchup of the afternoon on the Men's side, everyone was waiting to see what Bostic would do, but Court Masters, led by Geddes Robinson, Dwight Hardy, Eric Dunbar, and a cast of quality role players, once again neutralized Bostic and Philly's Enterprise in a rematch of the spring league's championship game. It looks like Bostic has a new nemesis. Can Bostic, last summer's Rookie of the Year and this year's spring league MVP, return Enterprise to the finals? Only time will tell. To be continued... ."
