THE SWINGING SIXTIES : SATTERFIELD, BARRETT BOTH GO FOR 60 PLUS IN FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND CLASSIC AGAINST HOOP STREET
Macy's Fourth of July fireworks spectacular can't compare to the fireworks that were displayed Saturday afternoon in a monumental instant classic of epic proportions between PR Pride/K1X and Hoop Street.
A week prior to this game, the infamous " The Cab Driver " broke " Serious Satellite " Kenny Satterfield's scoring record at Hoops in the Sun with 65 points. My first guess would be that Satterfield didn't take the news very well and seekd to reach the mountain top in Hoops in the Sun lore once again.
PR Pride/K1X, after losing in a shootout last week against Bingo's All-Stars, took the floor against Hoop Street. Both teams came in looking for their first victory of the season and for those who stayed in the city during the Fourth of July holiday weekend to watch this one, weren't the least bit disappointed. Everyone that was witnessing this classic before their very eyes knew it was going to be a very high scoring affair, with both teams being tied at 44 at the end of the first quarter. Second quarter didn't let up neither as PR Pride/K1X led Hoop Street 88-73 at halftime! Yes, 88-73 was the halftime score. What stood out at the half was Satterfield already posting up 36 points, Barrett having 29 points, Leon Martinez of Hoop Street having 23 points (with six three's) and Rashamell Jones of Hoop Street, formally of UConn, having 17 points. That was just the first half, indications of an absolute streetball classic for the ages were freakishly running rampid in the second half.
Satterfield and Martinez took the back seat in the third quarter, letting Barrett and Jones go to work. Six three's were hit amongst them, with both of them combining for 38 points in the third quarter. But the fourth quarter? All hell broke loose and shot after shot after shot kept going in. Layups, two-pointers, three-pointers, NBA three-point shots and Joe Dumars in your face type shots were going in. It was something that was never seen before and the crowd and players were all part of history in the making.
With less than a minute remaining, Satterfield, stuck on 65 points, hit a three point bomb that sent the crowd into a frenzy, giving him 68 points for the game and breaking " The Cab Driver's " record that was just a week old. Barrett, who had 63 points with two seconds remaining, hit a three point shot from the corner as time expired, giving him 66 points for the game and capping the afternoon off with an historical 178-165 victory over Hoop Street, as many of Hoops in the Sun's records were not only broken but shattered in this game alone. Hoop Street were led by Rashamell Jones with 53 points and Leon Martinez with 44 points, with both players combining for 16 three-point shots made.
As far as the records are concerned, Satterfield once again breaks the HITS scoring record (68), PR Pride/K1X scores the most points by a team in a game (178), both teams combined for the most total points (353), PR Pride/K1X scores the most points by a team in a half (88), Satterfield breaks the record for most three-point shots made by a player in a game (11) and PR Pride/K1X now owns the record for the most three-point shots made by a team in a game (23)
