IN A STATE OF FEAR

By RANDY CRUZ
One on One
RC:
"Primal Fear" is also being used in an upcoming K1X advertisement,
which means you're now down with the company after being with Nike
for a couple of years. What made you shift from Nike to K1X?
DP: Well I am not
exactly done with Nike, but K1X has opened other doors that are
needed for me to grow, not only as an athlete, but as a business
man.
RC: How
did getting down with K1X come about? How did they solidify you?
DP: Well they wanted
to do something for a while but I was not interested. I have always
been a Nike guy and Nike has always been good to me. Nike is not
just a streetball thing for me, it is bigger than that. I represent
Nike for my English National team, which is how I really got involved.
RC:
Do you see K1X taking you to allot of places, as far as marketing
is concerned, that Nike may not have taken you to?
DP: Of course I do,
they are doing a great job so far, but that is to be seen!
RC:
Favorite streetball moment?
DP: Winning my first
streetball chip at Hoops in the Sun, which was my stepping stone
to many more. Thank you HITS!
RC:
Biggest streetball influence(s)?
DP: John Strickland
and the Cruz Family
RC: Streetball
players you love to play with?
DP: Wow! That is too
much to list. I have a lot, lets see, Joey Cruz, Junie “General
Electric” Sanders, Charles Jones, John “Mookie” Thomas, Sean Simpson,
James “Stixx” Williams, “Thirst”, John “The Franchise” Strickland,
Ty Grant, Rasaun “Crabby” Young, Will “Silence of the Lambs” Cadiz,
Aaron “The Problem” Williams, Duane Woodward, Rob “Demolition Man”
Lewin ,BJ “The Beast” McFarlan, Kareem Reid, Antawn “Anti-Freeze”
Dobie, Garnett “Big Ticket” Thompson, Chudney Grey, Kashief Hamed,
Anthony Glover, Richie Parker and Reggie Freeman.
RC:
Your favorite streetball tournament that you'll go to no matter
what?
DP: Nike Pro City,
West 4th and of course HITS.
RC:
When it's time to hang it up, what's next for Darren Phillip?
DP: The business man,
which I have already started. I have two companies as well as real
estate all over the world. I will also help streetball along the
way and give back to something that has turned my life into something
special.
RC: Is
Darren Phillip a streetball legend? If so, why?
DP: I guess you can
say I am. I think I am because I am talked about in a good way and
that is a sign of a ball player doing all the right things.
